Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to find records associated with a domain. Different record types serve different purposes — A records point to IPv4 addresses, MX records direct email to the right servers, and TXT records store verification and policy information.

What do the different DNS record types mean?

A records map a domain to an IPv4 address. AAAA records map to IPv6. MX records control where email is delivered. TXT records store text data like SPF, DKIM, and domain verification. NS records list the authoritative nameservers. CNAME records create aliases pointing to another domain.

What is TTL in DNS?

TTL (Time To Live) is how long in seconds a DNS record is cached by resolvers. A TTL of 300 means resolvers cache the record for 5 minutes before checking again. Lower TTLs mean faster propagation when you change records but more DNS queries.

Why do different resolvers return different results?

DNS resolvers cache records independently. If you recently changed a DNS record, some resolvers may still have the old cached value while others have the new one. This is normal during DNS propagation and usually resolves within the TTL period.

Why is my DNS record not showing up?

New DNS records can take time to propagate depending on the TTL of the previous record. Check our DNS Propagation Checker tool to see which global regions have your new record versus the old one.
